PEA volunteers participated in the Life Remodeled Six-Day Project on the campus and surrounding neighborhood of Central High School / Durfee Elementary on the west side of Detroit, MI.
The Life Remodeled organization is a Detroit-based, non-profit that is dedicated to improving Detroit neighborhoods. This is a significant year for the city of Detroit as we look back to move forward in light of the 50th Anniversary of the 1967 Detroit Uprising.
There were 11,032 volunteers, from all walks of life, that came together to build a stronger and safer community, and through their efforts the six-day project broke records in every category boarding up 534 homes, removing blight on 367 city blocks, and making significant progress on the Durfee renovations.
The Life Remodeled organizers remarked at how beautiful it was to see volunteers of various races and ethnicities, religious backgrounds, and industries coming together to support one of Detroit’s most historic neighborhoods.
Volunteers shared stories of the many new connections and relationships that grew as a result of this effort and the appreciation and support shown by community residents. Many of the neighborhood youth expressed their excitement about the potential of Durfee, and even Durfee alumni returned to visit their school for the first time in many years! The organizers of Life Remodeled expressed their appreciation:
“This is what Life Remodeled is truly about, remodeling lives by working together side-by-side. Thanks to all the hardworking volunteers for playing a major role in this effort. We truly appreciate you and are immensely grateful for your service.”
Although the 2017 Six-Day Project has come to an end, you can still serve throughout the year. You can volunteer any day, Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30 pm. Please sign up on the Life Remodeled website at http://liferemodeled.com/volunteer/
There will be another Six Day Project: October 1 – October 6 in 2018, Life Remodeled will stay in the same neighborhood, but go beyond blight removal. This will include planting trees, perennials, and more.
